In 2013, JCA published a special issue on “New Media in Asia” in Volume 43, No. 4. That special was guest edited and introduced by Jason Abbott at the University of Kentucky. His introduction was titled “Assessing the Social and Political Impact of the Internet and New Social Media in Asia” (DOI: 10.1080/00472336.2013.785698).
That special issue included papers on Indonesia, Malaysia and China. The papers have been widely read and cited, with Merlyna Lim’s “Many Clicks but Little Sticks: Social Media Activism in Indonesia” (DOI: 10.1080/00472336.2013.769386) ranking as the second most viewed paper at the Journal’s website. It is available for free download.
Taylor & Francis Online has released several sets of papers on the media and politics and available for free download. Unfortunately, despite the fact that there’s been quite a lot written on the topic for Asia, including our special issue, little of it gets into this collection.
