Japan, its past and its present

JapanA new review, by Ignacio J. Miñambres, of Japan and the Shackles of the Past: What Everybody Needs to Know (DOI: 10.1080/00472336.2016.1144779) is available at JCA.

Japan and the Shackles of the Past is authored by R. Taggart Murphy and published by Oxford University Press.

Murphy surveys Japanese history and its present. The “shackles” are of the past and include the influence of the United States. The reviewer states that Murphy provides “a fascinating account of the most recent interventions by American diplomacy in Japanese internal affairs.”

The reviewer concludes that Murphy’s work is “an enjoyable and easy to read introduction to Japan’s history and society. It is also a key, updated overview of the country from the heterodox perspective inaugurated by Chalmers Johnson in 1982. The author’s insights and analysis allow a clearer perspective on contemporary Japan.”
