Malaysia’s political economy

Long-time contributor and member of the editorial board, Alec Gordon has contributed a new review, this time of The Development of Malaysian Capitalism: From British Rule to the Present Day for JCA.

This book is authored by another JCA contributor, Elsa Lafaye de Micheaux. Her book is published by the Strategic Information and Research Development Centre in Petaling Jaya, and was released in 2017.

Gordon describes the book as “innovative, absorbing and comprehensive,” adding that the “work offers much for those who are not Malaysia specialists but also some hard and positive thinking for old hands and deserves to be widely read…”. Embedded in French development studies, it is also a “theoretically-informed discussion of Malaysia’s political economy, beginning from the colonial era, encompassing the period of post-colonial economic growth and concluding around the time of the global financial crisis.”
