As part of JCA’s 50th anniversary celebrations in 2020, editor-in-chief Kevin Hewison has penned an editorial that briefly looks at the history of the journal.

The editorial will appear in Issue 1 in volume 50. That volume will include three special issues. The first, in issue 2, is on Marxian approaches to the study of East Asia. A second special issue is on the lasting impacts of the Cold War in Asia (issue 4) and a third is on caste and class in India (issue 5). There will also be articles in volume 50 by several members of the Editorial Board and by some of the journal’s authors from up to four decades ago, including by Jonathan Unger, who first appeared in JCA in 1973 and Anita Chan, who first published with us in 1974.
